Ammunition Hill has passed through many cycles over the course of history.
In the mandate era (1917-2948) the British built the school for officers behind the hill and chose to store their ammunition in a bunker on the hill- hence its name.
In the war of Independence (30 th Nov 1948- 20 th June 1949) the hill was conquered by Jordanians and was an army post, fortified with bunkers and trenches, close to the municipal borderline.
In the Six Day War , at two AM on the 5 th of June 1967, battalion 66 of the reserve brigade of the paratroopers arrived at the hill and after a blood soaked battle the soldiers were able to conquer the hill, thus opening the passageway to Mount Scopus and the old city. During the battle many commanders were injured or killed and so this battle is widely known as one won by privates,
Currently Ammunition Hill is a place of heritage, education, and a memorial site for the liberation of Jerusalem in the Six Day War. In its battles fell 182 soldiers from the Jerusalem Brigade, the Harel tank brigade, the Paratroopers brigade and the Air Force.
